Have you ever had your whole day planned out and then BAM! – in all of five minutes, it went down the drain? I know I’m not the only person who has used or heard the line “Just give me five more minutes.” If you’re like me, five minutes can easily turn into ten, which then turns into thirty, and thirty turns into an hour, an hour turns into later, later becomes tomorrow and at that point, you can forget about it! I know what you’re thinking – as long as it gets done, what’s the harm, right? Wrong. Very wrong. Let me give you an example of something so simple that if you procrastinate, it can turn into a more expensive issue…
Let’s take grocery shopping, for example. I have a grocery budget that I try to stick as close to as possible. I go grocery shopping every Friday ( or at least it’s on my calendar for every Friday). My oldest son is in school, so I try to go before I have to pick him up, that way he can entertain the baby while I put up the groceries (plus other reasons, like being harassed for toys all the time lol). Usually, my meals are already planned out for the week, so once I go shopping, I’m good.
During this time of the year when it’s cold and rainy like today, it’s very easy to put things off until tomorrow. There have been a few times when I’ve postponed my trip to the grocery store – or skipped it all together -and immediately regretted it. Depending on the meal, if there are no leftover ingredients from the last trip to the store, dinner is not being cooked and we have to eat out ($$). Why not just go to the store? Honestly, I have to be in a certain mindset to go grocery shopping or shopping in general for me to have an effective trip. By putting my trip to the grocery store off, I then inconvenience the rest of my weekend plans by having to find time to fit it into my schedule by Monday, and if I don’t… that’s right – more money is being spent out of laziness.
Thankfully, through trial and error, I now have my routine down packed. I still have an occasional slip up here and there, like this past week, but for the most part, it gets done when it’s supposed to.
Your turn! Think about a daily or weekly task that you constantly put off, and how that throws everything else out of whack. How does that make you feel? lol Just kidding, but seriously, let’s make a pact and stop letting those extra ‘5’ minutes control our lives. There’s still time to get everything done and in order so that we can start off this coming week on the right foot! Now get to it!
…til next time.
